The world is currently facing a packaging waste crisis as a result of the plastic manufacturing industry nearly doubling in just 20 years, from 180 million tonnes to over 400 million tonnes annually. Packaging is still the primary cause of this growing issue, filling landfills to overflowing and contaminating the oceans in alarming quantities. Surprisingly, less than 10% of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste generated worldwide has been recycled, meaning that the remaining plastic debris will persist in the environment for millennia. In order to raise awareness of the real-world consequences of packaging waste on our beaches, we also organised a Beach Clean-Up Drive in Clifton, Karachi, with IBA students.

Packaging is becoming more and more in demand as companies grow and e-commerce thrives. Even though packaging is essential for product ease and protection, single-use items, excessive plastic consumption, and non-biodegradable waste are accelerating environmental degradation. Long-term effects like increased carbon emissions, environmental harm, and resource depletion will result from this tendency if it is not controlled. Because of this, switching to environmentally friendly packaging is more important than ever. Recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable materials are examples of eco-friendly substitutes that preserve performance and efficiency while drastically reducing environmental harm.

Key Insights from RPL’s Sustainable Packaging Workshop

To address these pressing concerns, Roshan Packages Limited (RPL) launched Packaging 101: Sustainability & Innovation, a series of workshops intended to educate professionals, companies, and students about the implications of packaging waste and the need for sustainable alternatives. These classes provide a comprehensive understanding of packaging’s role in waste management, pollution, and climate change. They are taught by our Sustainability Marketing Manager, Rija Tayyab, and are held at esteemed colleges and corporate offices.

In addition to theoretical discussions, participants examine the relationship between waste management and packaging design and the three pillars of sustainability: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Participants concretely understand sustainable packaging through hands-on activities like painting boxes to promote creative reuse, balancing objects on paper to gauge material strength, and converting paper into flute structures to test endurance. Participants can examine and distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable materials through a hands-on demonstration of RPL’s environmentally friendly packaging options.

Practical Sustainability in Packaging

We place strong focus on the safety of materials used to package food and beverages. The program educates participants on the dangers of BPA plastics, toxic coatings, and uncertified recycled materials. Food-grade packaging meets basic safety requirements and ensures that no hazardous materials will contaminate food. Companies that deal with consumables need to understand these key differences because they impact customer health and sustainability. These interactive discussions and expert-led Q&A sessions allow participants to have meaningful conversations about responsible packaging solutions.

We recycle all paper waste, use solar power and Roshan Ehad to cut carbon emissions by over 130 MT annually, and create boxes made entirely of recycled materials. Additionally, we have set the standard for water-based and recycled ink occasion packaging, promoting eco-friendly alternatives without compromising on quality. Our POS perforated cartons are another example of our commitment to waste reduction and responsible packaging.

Roshan Packages Limited (RPL) is committed to providing a comprehensive health and life insurance policy to ensure the financial security and well-being of its employees. A structured framework has been established to manage policy renewals, employee enrollment and removal, and insurance claim processing in an efficient and timely manner.

Coverage and Eligibility: This insurance facility is available exclusively to all regular employees of RPL.

Policy Renewal: The Human Resources department initiates the insurance policy renewal one month before the policy’s expiry, typically in September each year. Competitive quotations are obtained from top-rated insurance companies and evaluated based on benefit scope, pricing, and company ratings. The selected proposal is then reviewed and approved by senior management, including the CEO.

Employment Enrollment and Removal:

• The company adds new hires to the policy immediately after they join.
  
• The company removes employees who leave, effective their last working day.

Insurance Cards: The company issues insurance cards within three weeks of policy renewal or new employee enrollment. HR hands over the cards after confirming receipt, and employees should report any concerns to the HR team.

Disability Claims: In the event of disability covered by the policy, employees must:

• Provide a completed claim form signed by a healthcare provider.
  
• Attach relevant documents such as hospital discharge summaries, medical reports, and invoices.

The HR and Compensation & Benefits (C&B) teams ensure documentation is complete and submit the claim to the insurance provider. In case of delays, the C&B Lead follows up with the insurer to ensure timely disbursement.

Death Claims: In the unfortunate event of an employee’s death (natural or accidental), RPL takes the following steps:

• The C&B Lead immediately notifies the insurance company.
  
• The deceased employee’s family submits a NADRA-issued death certificate and a succession certificate.
  
• Once approved, the company processes the insurance cheque and hands it over to the family following proper legal procedure.

Expanding Healthcare Access Through Hospital Partnerships

At Roshan Packages Limited, we think that the cornerstone of a successful business is a healthy workforce. We have made significant efforts to increase access to high-quality healthcare because we place a high priority on employee well-being. RPL proudly provides employees and their immediate families with special medical benefits through MOUs it has signed with top healthcare organisations. Three reputable medical facilities currently have MOUs with RPL: Niazi Hospital, Islamabad Diagnostic Centre (IDC), and Evercare Hospital Lahore. Partnering with Islamabad Diagnostic Centre:

On June 10, 2025, we signed an MOU with Islamabad Diagnostic Centre (IDC), one of the most reputable diagnostic service providers in Pakistan. This partnership offers subsidised diagnostic and imaging services to RPL workers and their immediate family members, including spouses, kids, and parents, at all IDC branches across the country, including those in Lahore and Islamabad. To avail these services, which are available on cash payment basis, employees need to present their RPL Employee Card or Referral Letter, along with relationship proof. The benefits include:

• Covid-19 and outsource tests charged at actual rates

Partnering with Niazi Hospital:

On May 25, 2023, we signed an MOU with Niazi Hospital, a reputable local medical centre.
